PM Modi said that there might be a better place to start the GST than the historic Middle Hall “on the night of August 14, 1947 witnessed the country’s independence. It was a reference to a congress that objected to a midnight session in the middle hall that had been used to start the reforms that such meetings celebrated before independence.
“Today, after many years, for the new economy, a new force for our federalism – there can not be a better place than this,” Prime Minister Modi said, much of the applause of an 800-member audience. “We will decide on the future of India,” the prime minister said.

President Pranab Mukherjee, the last speaker before the start, said it was a matter of personal satisfaction for him because of his role as Minister of Finance earlier. He said the new law is a homage to “the maturity and wisdom of Indian democracy.”
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley welcomed the GST as the biggest and most ambitious tax reform and said the consensus among the parties that GST had set a high position in Indian politics at a time when the world is seeing slow growth and division. “It turns out that India can think and act together with maturity for a broader purpose,” the minister said.
The middle hall was specially designed today and was equipped with new carpets and sound systems for a great evening. Former Prime Minister Deve Gowda sat on a high table at PM and Chairman as well as Summit Mahajan, Lok Sabha, and Vice President Hamid Ansari.

Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh was also invited to sit at a high table but did not run because his party boycotted Congress, his vice president Rahul Gandhi calling her “self-promotional show“. Mr. Jaitley refused the charge.
Congress, Trinamool Congress, RJD, DMK and Left Parties stayed away from the event. However, the leaders of other opposition parties such as the Nationalist Party and the Samajwadi Party have attended the function.
The GST Council, which has detailed the milestone reform, has reduced the proportion of fertilizers from 12 percent to 5 percent and exclusive tractor parts from 28 percent to 18 percent to reduce the burden on farmers.
The Central Hall of Parliament is a witness of midnight sessions like today only three times earlier. When the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s famous “Tryst with Destiny” speech on Independence Day made the occasion of the Silver Anniversary of Independence in 1972 and the Golden Anniversary in 1997.
